Things that are random about London
August 13th, 2007 by Zofia
Inspired by Marcel’s love of lists on his blog I thought I might attempt a list on my blog! I have been working on this list for a couple of weeks now and have decided to post it now. It is a list of things that I have found ‘random’ about London so far, as compared to Wellington.
- Using miles instead of kilometers, but using kilograms not pounds.
- Standing on the right hand side of escillators so people who want to walk on them can do so on the left. And then, being directed to walk on the left side in the tube tunnels! No consistency!
- Seeing a poster for Taika Waititi’s film “Eagle vs Shark” in an Underground station. (Random New Zealandness!)
- Weird street numbering. Eg 24, 25, 26, 27 all on the same side of the street, but then all the other numbers being as you would expect, on opposite sides of the street.
- Paying for things right down to the individual pence (not rounding to the nearest 5 or 10 as in NZ).
- It seems you can make anything into a musical, for example, Lord of the Rings, Monty Python, Bad Girls…
- London is way smaller than it seems – places that look really far away on a map are well within walking distance and everything connects up with everything else!
- Park Lane only has Hotels on it!
- Paintings from the National Gallery collection on random street corners.
- My local supermarket closes at 5pm on a Sunday (and doesn’t open till 11am on Sunday)! So early, I have been caught out by that 2 weeks in a row now!
