I’m dreaming of a white February!
February 20th, 2009 by Zofia
After a year and a half of living in London, one cold February evening I finally saw snow really properly fall and settle and create a surreal winter wonderland that this Kiwi girl from a seaside city had never experienced before – how exciting!
My flatmate and I were like little kids, sticking our heads out the windows of our flat with our cameras in tow trying to capture snowfall by night. Lesson learned – night photos are no easier to do when snowfall is involved
So quite a lot of attempts later I finally had a few pictures which I think capture the night time snowfall rather nicely.

Imagine my greater delight when the following morning I woke up to discover the snow had just got heavier overnight and the whole of London was covered in a beautiful white blanket of powdery snow. This naturally caused havoc to the city, stopping all forms of public transport so that most people got to take a ‘snow day’ and not head into work. Unfortunately I lived within walking distance from my work (well a good 45-60 minute walk) so did not really have an excuse not to go into work, thus I made my way slowly to work making the most of the opportunity to take in the white city that London had become.

I must admit, the temptation to stay home so I could go and play in the snow making snowmen and throwing snowballs was very tempting (and judging by the number of people who posted those sorts of pictures on Facebook in the days which followed I assume that it was what most people did actually do!), however I don’t have appropriate snow clothes (no gumboots or snow shoes and so on) so wrapped in my winter coat with a scarf, gloves and woollen hat I took my sneaker-covered feet off to work.

All I can say is WOW! London really does look magical when covered in a layer of snow! Even this great pair of statues on Bond Street seemed to enjoy the snow!

The snow contiuned to fall during the morning but by the time I left work for the day the snowfall had stopped and we didn’t see it again. On the journey home I couldn’t elp but smile at all the snowmen I saw along the way, each one a different shape and size, each one special to those that made it. When I got into my house which is on the top floor of my building I decided to open the window and make a little snowman on the windowsill using the snow still sitting there in the flower-box outside. I improvised some hands with plastic forks and then made the eyes, nose and smile with some foil from a chocolate I had eaten earlier. My snowman was small but was the first snowman I had ever made so I am proud of him. I left the curtain open that evening so I could enjoy the smiling face of my snowman. Unfortunately he had melted off the edge by the morning, but I enjoyed him for the few hours I had him

Hopefully we have a few more snow days while I am living in London…
